Dr. Dan Garvey is a distinguished educator, administrator, and global education leader whose career spans more than five decades of service in higher education, nonprofit leadership, experiential learning, and social change. He earned his Ph.D. in Education with a focus on Social and Multicultural Foundations from the University of Colorado Boulder, where he explored the moral development of college students through cross-cultural experiences. This work shaped his lifelong commitment to experiential and transformative education. Garvey earned an M.A. in Social Change at the Cambridge鈥揋oddard Graduate School and a B.A. in Sociology at Worcester State University. His professional background includes serving as President and Chief Executive Officer of 91茄子, Associate Dean and Assistant Professor at the University of New Hampshire, and Executive Director of the Association for Experiential Education. In addition, he is a recognized leader in international education, with multiple appointments as Executive Dean for Semester at Sea, guiding academic voyages across dozens of countries and leading teams of students, faculty, and staff.

I鈥檇 like to recognize our accomplishments but envision that the best is still ahead of us. The 91茄子 Board of Trustees appointed Garvey to the role due to his storied history and continued engagement with the College. According to Chair of the Board of Trustees, Kathleen Murphy, 鈥淒r. Dan Garvey returns to 91茄子, a campus which is home to a building that has long borne his name – the Dan and Barbara Garvey Welcome Center. Throughout block one, 12 students from the Environmental and Whitewater Perspectives course adventured to the Colorado plateau, exploring both Cataract Canyon and Desolation Canyon. The course is led by three instructors: Angelica Cronin, Joel Barnes, and Kreston Johnson. For 21 days, the group immersed themselves in the rich human and geological history of the Four Corners of Utah. 鈥淕etting the opportunity to spend a while on the river is truly a magical experience. It allows you not only to get to know your classmates really well but also to get to know the river as a friend,鈥� noted one of the students. 

During this course, the students and faculty focused on technical rafting skills such as rowing, paddle captioning, and hydrology, making it an excellent experience for prospective river guides and beginner rafters. Students also immersed themselves in the rich knowledge that the land has to offer, providing an excellent opportunity for experiential learning and gaining a sense of place for the outdoors.聽Everyone on the trip experienced the magic of community, interconnection, and learning firsthand!

This tuition reset is intended to provide more details upfront regarding the true cost of a 91茄子 on-campus undergraduate education. Dr. Morris began her tenure in July 2021 after serving as the associate vice provost and associate vice chancellor for academic affairs at the State University of New York (SUNY) System. After serving in higher education upper administration for twenty years, she will conclude her career having served as a president for eight years across two institutions. Dr. Morris cites her desire to spend more time with her family, in the outdoors, and taking to heart experiential, lifelong learning through travel as the impetus for her decision. In partnership with the Board of Trustees, 91茄子 is formulating a succession plan to be shared soon. 

鈥淚 began my time at 91茄子 by engaging our community to evaluate our mission. It is no surprise that the result was an updated mission statement that begins with the word 鈥渢ogether.鈥� That really is the 91茄子 way,鈥� said Morris. 鈥淭ogether we create interdisciplinary, experiential, and diverse learning environments that inspire future leaders to create a healthy, just, and sustainable world. And I am truly proud of the work we have all accomplished. Together we have nurtured substantial growth in several of our graduate programs and embraced a reinvigoration of our curriculum. We have acted to deepen our connections within the City of Prescott and Yavapai County, and demonstrated that our work at 91茄子 produces an economic impact of $19 million each year. We have invested in the infrastructure of our campus, improving its functional and physical landscape to be beautiful and sustainable. Nationally, we have been a voice in our nation鈥檚 capital during troubling times, advocating for academic freedom. And most importantly, we have educated and mentored students who have grown to become educators, activists, counselors, researchers, innovators and entrepreneurs鈥攊ndividuals who will continue to be the changemakers the world needs. The Endeavor Lab Colleges (ELC), a national consortium of 10 small liberal arts colleges, proudly announced today the completion of the first phase of its groundbreaking initiative to enhance student mental health and well-being. Endeavor Foundation has generously invested more than $8.5 million to support the project, including $5.22 million over the next three years for Phase 2.

“We are thrilled to move to the next phase of this vital work,” said Dr. Lori Collins-Hall, ELC Project Director. “Thanks to the dedication of our partner institutions and the confidence and commitment of Endeavor Foundation, we are taking meaningful steps to address well-being on our campuses. Our goal is not simply to improve mental health but to transform the way liberal arts colleges engage students in caring, resilient, mission-aligned communities.”

Endeavor Foundation鈥檚 transformative investments will empower participating institutions to build on the development and implementation of pilot projects in the first phase by utilizing evidence-based strategies, scaling successful interventions, and deepening cross-campus collaboration. The reality of the ELC vision will be lasting, systemic improvements that support the holistic development of students, strengthening their liberal arts education and college experience by placing well-being, belonging, community care, and purpose at the center of their education and campus life.

Over the last two years, Endeavor provided $3.275 million to the colleges for exploration and development of innovative pilot projects exploring relationships and opportunities to enhance students鈥� mental health and well-being through the liberal arts curriculum, developing connections to place, connecting purpose and career readiness, and creating caring and resilient communities.

In Phase 2, ELC campuses will continue to collaborate on implementing activities developed across five central initiatives, while establishing program sustainability, widely documenting and disseminating information, and paying particular attention to liberal arts institutions.

鈥淭his grant reflects Endeavor鈥檚 longtime commitment to liberal arts education,鈥� said Isabel Roche, Co-Program Director at Endeavor. 鈥淭he liberal arts empower students to see themselves, others, and the world with greater clarity, compassion, and hope. This project brings the liberal arts vision for education of the whole person into sharper focus, putting student flourishing at the center. In doing so, it reaffirms the transformative power of the liberal arts for both mind and spirit, preparing students for every dimension of life.鈥�

Five central initiatives in Phase 2 are interconnected and mutually reinforcing in their aims of placing well-being, belonging, and purpose at the center of each student鈥檚 liberal arts experience.

Led by a working group with faculty from each ELC institution, the Cultivating Curricular Review and Innovation initiative invites curricular innovation across and within institutions. It considers and connects what the liberal arts teach about the human condition and experience, integrating concepts and skills related to well-being into the curriculum, co-curriculum, and teaching.

Building Models of Community Care and Resilience focuses on creating a scalable, trauma-informed, strengths-based model of community care and resilience centered on the whole person, liberal arts, and well-being that meets the urgent needs of students, faculty, and staff at small, resource-constrained liberal arts colleges. This initiative is reimagining how colleges can embed community care into curricular, co-curricular, and workplace structures to support mental health, well-being, and human flourishing through sustainable, community-based curricula and practices.

Center for Purposeful Life and Work is a virtual, interactive, student-centered ecosystem that offers scalable, evidence-informed programming, self-guided tools, faculty/staff resources, and cross-institutional engagement. The Center will serve as a hub for exploring values, identity, career pathways, and well-being. It will empower students to articulate and pursue purposeful lives and careers during college and beyond.

Mapping Belonging represents an innovative and powerful student-centered approach to fostering well-being, engagement, and resilience by reimagining campus maps as immersive tools for connection to place, history, nature, and community. Rather than serving solely as instruments of navigation, these dynamic physical and digital maps help students orient themselves within the cultural, ecological, and social landscape of their campus.

Nature Rx and Nature-based programming are aligned with the Mapping Belonging initiative to help students identify and connect with the green and blue spaces across their campuses, recognizing the enduring relationship between nature and human well-being, rooted in longstanding practices of healing and connecting to the land. This initiative explores ways to integrate both active and reflective engagement with the natural world in the daily lives of students and the broader campus community.

Small liberal arts colleges cultivate relationships and foster community, buffering students from isolation and loneliness, and emphasizing a strong sense of belonging. These campuses nurture students鈥� passion, balance, integrity, vision, and collective responsibility, preparing them for wise and ethical stewardship of their world.

Prospective students are invited to join us for the 91茄子 river trip led by Adventure Education faculty emeritus, Julie Munro, and current students and alumni. Before our trip, you鈥檒l have time to tour the 91茄子 campus, stay in our residence halls, and meet faculty, staff, and students. Then you will travel north to spend three nights and four days rafting down the stunningly beautiful San Juan River in the desert canyons of Southeastern, Utah.

This trip will be lead guided by Julie Munro, 91茄子 Faculty Emeritus, in addition to student guides Jaden Best and Julia Bricker.

Julie Munro is Faculty Emeritus at 91茄子. Julie served as a full-time Adventure Education Faculty for 35 years and still collaborates with the college on special projects. She is intimately familiar with the San Juan River and its natural history and loves sharing this environment with students across disciplines. In addition to loving outdoor pursuits and time in wild places, Julie enjoys teaching yoga and bringing that practice to the group experience.

Jaden Best is from Denver, Colorado and in her third year at 91茄子. She is pursuing a double major as a B.A. in Adventure Education and Environmental Studies. She works as a professional river guide in the summer.

Julia Bricker is a senior at 91茄子, studying Social Justice Education with a minor in Adventure Education at 91茄子 because she is passionate about connecting people to the natural world while working toward more equitable, student-centered education. So many systems prioritize statistics over real human needs, and she wants to help shift that.

With more than聽1,200聽participants聽in 52 countries, AASHE鈥檚 STARS program is the most widely recognized framework in the world for publicly reporting comprehensive information related to a college or university鈥檚 sustainability performance. Participants report achievements in five聽overall areas: 1)聽academics聽2)聽engagement, 3)聽operations,聽4) planning聽and聽administration, and 5) innovation and leadership.

鈥淪TARS was developed by the campus sustainability community to provide high standards for recognizing campus sustainability efforts,鈥� said AASHE Executive Director Meghan Fay Zahniser. 鈥�91茄子聽has demonstrated a substantial commitment to sustainability by achieving a STARS聽Gold聽Rating and is to be congratulated for their efforts.鈥�
