Exploring the impact of the loss of the Mother Tongue, and its impact on the Environment; using micro case studies of Finland, Wales, Indigenous N.America and the Maasai Mara.

From my interest to decolonize early childhood care and education, I began considering the impact of the loss of the Mother Tongue, and its impact on the developing child.  Through this research and discovering UNESCO’s Decade of Language Revitalization, I began considering the impact of language on place.  Wanting to not be in an educational silo, I believe its critical to understand, the whole impact of the loss of Indigenous Languages. When we lose language of place, or the mother tongue, we lose those lessons, words, and culture that help communities sustain environmental health and well being. We are all one.

I am interested in building resilient communities that regenerate well-being for people and the planet. I am looking at how an understanding of the long-term impact and implications of trauma can inform a framework that promotes healing and well-being. Climate change and technology, especially A.I. are major factors that shape our future, so I am exploring how a healing-informed sociotechnical imaginary can assist us in the transition towards sustainable, just, and well communities.

Growing up in Germany in the 1980s, with the weight of the past, the promise of We are the World, and the fall of the wall, I was convinced that the end of hunger and world peace are in our future, and I was ready to roll up my sleeves. With distrust in the relevance of mainstream education, I was set to cluster my education together through volunteer work in South Africa, non-credit courses in Waldorf School Administration in the U.S., and acting school in Berlin after graduating high school. Still hungry for knowledge and ways to better understand the world, I enrolled in the Social Anthropology and Development Studies program at the University of London, School of Oriental and African Studies, at the age of 23. Holding strong objections to viewing the world through the glasses of anthropologists, I changed my degree to African Studies and Development Studies instead after my first year of study.

Moving on to a trainee program with Trickle Up in NYC, I was exposed to the concepts of micro-grants and micro-lending to support development, particularly for poor entrepreneurs worldwide. Given the desire to start a family, I began forging a career path in the U.S. in fund development, supporting education, and ending gender-based violence. With a growing understanding of the power dynamics in our world, my realization that hunger and world peace are far off also grew, shaping my career change to becoming a parenting educator so I could work on the micro level. Recognizing the entanglement of the individual with their social, political, economic, and environmental context and the impact of trauma on all spheres, I became interested in building resilient communities with mechanisms to support healing and regenerate well-being.

In 2020, as a capstone project in my master’s in social justice and community organizing, I developed a master-volunteer program for building community resilience. The program is now offered by Cornell Cooperative Extension Orange as part of a project to address climate justice and build community resilience. Recognizing the enormous transition necessary to realize communities incorporating the mechanism to regenerate well-being, I explored the possibilities that social imaginaries may offer as a tool for change. My exploration quickly made it clear that climate change and technologies like A.I. will arguably shape our future more significantly than we can imagine.
My doctoral research, therefore, addresses the nexus of resilience, climate change, and technology at the grass-roots level by engaging communities in the process of developing a healing-informed sociotechnical imaginary as a guide to transition towards a worldview that recognizes the connection between humans (Anthropos), planetary life (Eco), and technology (Techno).

“* Exploring regenerative agriculture as a potential solution to feed people at scale while tackling the atmospheric carbon problem

Reducing waste in food and nutrition systems, especially as it relates to packaging”

Confronting the intersection of personal agency and food procurement and production systems as it relates to the true cost of foods

Tackling an earth-first approach to nutrition, and the possibility that feeding people in this way may also provide the most health promoting options

“I have spent my career in the natural products industry as a C-Suite executive and omega-3 pioneer. Having scaled Nordic Naturals over dozens of growth hurdles and challenges, I gained a full-circle understanding of wild fish stock sustainability, procurement, processing, and packaging. With a deep understanding of fish sustainability challenges, I shifted my focus to algae, leading the development and launch of 脙鈥搑l脙露 Nutrition, a brand that features the world芒鈧鈩s first carbon-negative algae-based supplements. On this journey, I learned that incrementalism can only get you so far, and that sometimes a radical shift is what’s needed to create viable nutrition sources that have true regenerative potential.

I launched my first podcast, Care More Be Better, to cover social and ecological issues. We often discuss incrementalism, and when big shifts are more appropriate. My second show, Nutrition Without Compromise, hones in on the intersection of health, nutrition and sustainability. These shows each provide the opportunity to interview subject matter experts about their research, deepening my knowledge base as I approach subjects with curiosity. One such guest, Dr. Joseph Maroon shared, “”my goal in life is to die young as old as possible””. When he shared this perspective, I not only agreed, but felt that everyone deserved the opportunity to enjoy that reality. My vision crystallized before me. I would work to reveal sustainable nutrition and health solutions that are accessible to all.”

Sustainable Learning and Education, Sustaining Mental Health and Identity, Participation, and Purpose in Education, Role-oriented learning environments, modeling sustainability in education

Paul has been an outdoor educator, an administrator and business manager, became a licensed mental health therapist, and most recently founded a non-profit education organization in order to provide education with a research and delivery platform. His work in mental health with people of all ages and his passion for enhancing sustainability practice led him to look for ways to amplify impact in sustainability. As someone who closely examines how ideas influence behaviors and relationships with self and society, Paul looks to the future of education by researching how to sustain students, educators, administrators, parents, and systems of education. He believes that through growing awareness of what ideas are at work in our lives and examining how those ideas impact the actions we take, spreading new and more sustainable metaphors and stories can help us to move towards iterations of sustainable behavior. By shifting the focus away from people’s behavior as driven by internal, psychological metaphors that promote the idea of a fixed identity, and towards the ecologies of ideas that influence people, the work puts the burden of blame on ideas as agential actors—freeing up people to work more collaboratively and iteratively to create needed changes. As an activist researcher, Paul hopes to generate gentle and co-created influence by taking what we already understand and collaborating on ways to make sustainable philosophies and methods of education more accessible across educational systems.

My research area is Sub-sahara Africa. A region of 60% areate land fertile for agro growth. However,聽 85 percent of what is consumed come from foreign countries that have less than 25% land used for agriculture. Several factors such as: colonial imprints, barriers to trade, poor governance, lack of technology and innovations have contributed to the dilemma. Identifying a pathway to sustainable growth in the region by introducing conceptual models and frameworks have stimulated the reason for this research. This models can be adapted by governments, multilateral organizations, and farmers to solve some of the problems this study has listed.聽
